In September 2014 she fractured her pelvic bone after crashing in the team time trial at the 2014 World Championships in Ponferrada, Spain. She was forced to walk with crutches for a few days, and had to delay her start to the 2015 season for several weeks. (cyclingnews.com, 26 Sep 2015; wielerflits.nl, 30 May 2015)
:
She was first introduced to the sport of cycling by going to watch her two older brothers ride at competitions. She was eventually allowed to try a couple of races on a regular bike, and soon started training at the WV Noordwesthoek cycling club. "After a couple of races, I was sold. I wanted to become a cyclist. When I turned eight I immediately started competing." (annavanderbreggen.nl, 07 Feb 2016; wielerflits.nl, 30 May 2015)
:
She was drawn to cycling by the social aspect of the sport and its competitive nature. "It was very social. After the training or races, we'd toss our bike stuff aside and play games. But the competitiveness was always there, too. My friends got me to training rides and to the races but once I was at the race, I wanted to win. I remember that before each race, my teammates and I would go and look at the trophies and that's what you were going for then - the idea of taking home that trophy." (cyclingtips.com, 29 Jul 2015)
