TWO SPORTS IN TOKYO
He was selected to represent the Netherlands in both track cycling and road cycling at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Primarily a track cyclist, he has also competed in road cycling and in 2021 he rode for the BEAT Cycling team on the UCI Continental Circuit. He was chosen for the Olympic road cycling team because the Royal Dutch Cycling Union [KNWU] felt the track team had an excellent chance of gold medals, and selecting Havik for both squads allowed them to bring another track cyclist. "I think we could have filled in the fifth place [in the road cycling team] with the cyclists we have available in a different way, but it is a fact that this choice was made in connection with the chances of gold in the team sprint. I am convinced that Yoeri Havik can carry out a great role for the team," Dutch national road cycling coach Koos Moerenhout said. (netherlandsnewslive.com, 14 May 2021)
