He sustained a large wound to his leg and his hip after crashing during the 13th stage of the 2019 Tour de France. He was taken to a nearby hospital in Pau where he underwent an hour-long surgery to repair the torn skin, capsule, and muscle of his upper thigh and hip. He had a second operation after transferring to a hospital near his home in Herentals, Belgium, and then began an intensive rehabilitation programme.
