General
FOOTBALL TO ROAD CYCLING
He played football at junior level from age four, beginning his career with the youth sides of Anderlecht in Belgium before moving to the youth ranks of PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands at age 11. At age 14 he returned to Anderlecht before switching to road cycling at age 17. "[When I was] at PSV my parents were doing 180-kilometre trips each way every day for training. They did that for a number of months and it was chaotic, but they wanted to do everything for me. My style of play was a bit similar to how I ride a bike. I had a big engine and tried to cover every blade of grass as a defensive midfielder, but I lacked technique. Altogether I spent around 11 years at Anderlecht and to be honest, the last few years were the toughest. They broke me a bit mentally. But looking back on it now, it has made me stronger as a person and in life." (cyclingweekly.com, 26 Apr 2020; cyclingnews.com, 09 Apr 2020; allinfo.space, 25 Sep 2019)
