There were fears his career as a professional cyclist was over after he sustained a serious knee injury in 2009. He rode as an amateur in 2010 after failing to secure a contract with a professional team before joining Astana in 2011. "I enjoyed riding as an amateur, it was a completely different atmosphere. Maybe my first two pro years weren't too much fun for me, so I really enjoyed being back there in the game and winning, maybe small races, but still winning.
