In May 2018 he was diagnosed with Epstein-Barr, a debilitating virus, after competing in the 2018 Giro d'Italia. He missed the rest of the 2018 season. (velonews.com, 04 Dec 2018, 22 Aug 2018)

He sustained a knee injury in the early part of 2017. (velonews.com, 22 Aug 2018)

He crashed into a traffic signal while competing at the 2013 Trofeo Laigueglia in Liguria, Italy. He sustained a head trauma, a pulmonary contusion, and fractured his cheekbone and his skull. He also broke his right collarbone, which led to a loss of sensitivity and mobility in his right arm. He underwent surgery on his collarbone immediately after the accident, and then had a further operation on his damaged nerves three months later. It took one year of therapy for him to make a full recovery. (eltiempo.com, 29 May 2016; cyclingnews.com, 28 Apr 2016)

VICTORY SIGN
He celebrates his victories by raising his right arm, which was affected with loss of sensitivity after his crash in 2013. "I began raising my arm after every victory in the Tour of California [where in 2014 he claimed the queen stage]. It was my first race after the injury and that gesture has become a symbol for me. Because with the injury I could not raise my arm. After that race I showed myself that I could be the same as before, or even better." (bienestarcolsanitas.com, 01 Jul 2017)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
In 2015 he set up Equipo Esteban Chaves to support young riders in Colombia. Working together with his father, he hopes the team will compete at national events. In 2016 he established Fundacion Esteban Chaves to provide healthcare for children. "We get resources to fund operations for children with orthopaedic problems and who do not have the money for them."
