He broke two ribs during the 2020 Tour de Wallonie in Belgium. He fractured another rib during the 2020 Tour de France. (cyclingnews.com, 01 Feb 2021)

In 2013 he spent time in hospital after catching pneumonia. The illness led to a collapsed lung that left him bed-ridden. He has a suppressed immune system and weak lungs, and gets chest infections several times a year. (inthebunch.co.za, 02 Apr 2020)

His parents introduced him to mountain biking, and he would compete in children's races while they participated in the adult events.
