She sustained a broken hip, cracked ribs, and a dislocated shoulder after a fall in the 2013 Tour of California in the United States of America. She was out of action for a year. (teamusa.org, 20 Nov 2020; velonews.com, 17 Feb 2017)

She had three operations in the space of 14 months in 2009 and 2010. (knoxnews.com, 17 Jun 2021)

In 2007 she was diagnosed with a case of skin cancer. She underwent a surgical procedure to remove the margins around the melanoma. She fully recovered, with an 11cm scar on her back to remind her of the operation. (cyclingnews.com.au, 04 Dec 2007)

In 2000 she suffered plica syndrome in her left knee. (amberneben.com, 14 May 2008)

In her final two years of high school she sustained multiple stress fractures. Later, when she was running at college, she again suffered the problem, this time in her shins and hip. Eventually the constant injuries led her to give up competitive running. (amberneben.com, 14 May 2008)

She suffered a case of spinal meningitis that put her in a coma for three days when she was age four. Her doctors feared that she would not regain consciousness and if she did she would likely be deaf, brain damaged, or both. Luckily she recovered with no ill effects. (amberneben.com, 14 May 2008)

She took up mountain bike racing after a series of stress fractures led her to give up her aspirations of being a distance runner. After several years riding on the dirt, she took part in some road races in 2001 and decided to stick with it. (USA Cycling, 17 Apr 2007)

"Work hard and never give up. It's ok if things are hard, and you get discouraged. It's ok if things take longer than you expected. That's a normal part of life. Choose to respond. Keep trying. Keep learning. Control your attitude. Continue to persevere." (Instagram profile, 24 Jun 2021)

While at university she was named Comeback Athlete of the Year at the University of Nebraska. She qualified for the award by making great gains after being sidelined with a series of stress fractures. (amberneben.com, 14 May 2008)

General
OLDER RIDER
She will be age 46 when she competes at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I think it is a pretty cool story. I hope I inspire guys and gals, old and young to continue to dream and persevere. I don't know that my age affects my head that much other than to know I am old. How I race and what I can do in the races is not exactly the same as it was when I was a spring chicken, but that's part of the challenge I enjoy." (velonews.com, 05 May 2021, 22 Sep 2020)

COACHING INSPIRATION
She considered retirement after crashing and sustaining serious injuries at the 2013 Tour of California in the United States of America. She was then contacted by coach Tim Cusick, who continues to train her during the 2021 season. "I knew I was still hungry to try to win big things and if I was going to come back to do this, I was going to come back fully committed and with really big goals. Age aside, I knew it was still in me and I knew I needed help. Tim was observant enough, I think, to see something special in me and gracious enough with his time and knowledge to reach out. That was a big turning point for me as far as the second phase of my career." (trainright.com, 24 Mar 2021; teamusa.org, 20 Nov 2020)

SANCTION
In 2003 she tested positive for elevated levels of nandrolone while competing at an event in Montreal, QC, Canada. She denied that she knowingly ingested a banned substance but accepted an initial voluntary suspension before the US Anti-Doping Agency [USADA] handed her a six-month ban. She received a reduced ban after the USADA accepted her explanation that a supplement she had taken was contaminated with the banned substance. (cyclingnews.com, 07 Mar 2008)
