General
MOTHERHOOD
She gave birth to her daughter Clarissa in 2015. She only took six months away from cycling, and credits her husband Roberto and her family for helping her succeed on the bike. "I am a mother and it is harder work. Being a cyclist and a mother is not easy, but I have a big family that supports me, and an exceptional husband." (telegraph.co.uk, 07 Apr 2019; ceramicspeed.com, 01 Mar 2019; alecycling.com, 25 Mar 2018)

SANCTION
She was suspended for two years by the Court of Arbitration for Sport [CAS] and the International Cycling Union [UCI] after testing positive for fenfluramine after the 2008 European U23 Championships in Verbania, Italy. She denied intentional doping, saying a pharmacy had given her contaminated diet pills. The Italian Olympic committee [CONI] had initially banned her for only one year after finding she was not at fault, but the CAS ruled in favour of an appeal by the UCI to double the suspension.
