NICKNAME EXPLAINED
His nickname 'The Tractor of the Val di Non' is derived from his love for agriculture and the area in which he was raised. "Of the Val di Non [Italy] I love the landscape, I think it is one of the most beautiful valleys in Italy or in the world, its charm is undisputed. I love culture and agriculture, I am a bit biased being born here, it is inevitable that I like it and love it. It offers a lot both from a landscape and cultural point of view and there is a great tradition of fruit growing which is the driving economy of the valley. My family has a farm and the passion for fruit growing is equal to that of cycling. My nickname comes from the fact that, even before racing bikes, I have always loved tractors. I am an enthusiast and admirer of agricultural vehicles and being, according to my friends of the time, as strong as a tractor that never gives up, they gave me this nickname." SANCTIONS
He was suspended for six weeks by INEOS Grenadiers [then known as Team Sky] after he was accused of aiming racially motivated insults at another rider at the 2017 Tour of Romandie. He was expelled from the 2018 Tour de France after punching French rider Elie Gesbert during the race, and in 2020 he was disqualified from Kuurne-Bruxelles-Kuurne for throwing his bike in the direction of another rider.
