TOKYO PREPARATIONS
He has scouted the course for the road race at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo with the Italian national cycling team manager Davide Cassani. He hopes to be able to arrive in Japan at least a week ahead of the race to acclimatise to the climate and time zone. "The path is hard but it suits me. The climate is particular, it is very humid. SURGERY
In November 2020 he underwent rhinoplasty surgery to fix a long-standing breathing problem. "I had the rhinoplasty surgery at the end of the season after the Giro [d'Italia]. Since this was a particular year where we couldn't do much and the mood wasn't the best, we decided to do this operation. It was an operation that I had needed for several years. I am experiencing a lot of benefits. Now I am finally able to breathe even in the recovery phase in sleep. I am gaining a lot but I know that my breathing still needs to improve. The profile from a physical point of view has also changed a bit. I had broken my nose twice, the first as a child on a bike and then in 2015 during the last stage of the Tour del'Avenir."
