She initially took up mountain bike as summer training for speed skating. "When I discovered skating at age 11, I became more serious and the elite athlete in me appeared for the first time. But as a skater I realised that you also have to train hard in the summer. That's how I got on the bike. Cycling didn't satisfy me, so I opted for mountain biking. She has competed in marathon speed skating at the Dutch championships, and finds the sport complements her mountain biking career. "It is the combination that makes me successful. I think marathon skating is too much fun to just give up. I also gain competitive hardness all year round.
