His grandfather Raymond Poulidor competed in road cycling representing France, and achieved eight podium finishes at the Tour de France between 1962 and 1976. His father Adrie van der Poel competed in road cycling internationally, including at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. His older brother David has competed in cyclo-cross at international level and won gold at the 2016 Jingle Cross event in Iowa City, IA, United States of America.
