In February 2018 he broke his left radius bone and his right wrist in a crash during the third stage of the Tankwa Trek event in South Africa. He required an operation on his left radius, and was back on his bike the following month. The injury did not prevent him competing at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, QLD, Australia, where he won a bronze medal. His father encouraged him into cycling as a child. After breaking his right femur while BMX racing and spending a year in a cast, his parents persuaded him to try downhill mountain biking instead. (saschoolsports.co.za, 16 Feb 2014)

"I think the biggest thing to learn is to never give up hope. Persistence is key. There will be those tough times where it feels like life is trying to get you down and things aren't going to plan, but if you keep on trying and don't let go of your dreams and goals, you'll always come out on top. No dream is too big and anything is possible. Never give up." (durban.getitonline.co.za, 04 Aug 2016)

General Interest

General
ELECTRIC CHAMPION
He became the first e-MTB [Electric Mountain Bike] cross-country world champion when he claimed victory at the 2019 World Championships in Mont-Sainte-Anne, QC, Canada. He sees a bright future for e-MTB racing, and that the bikes will be a useful training tool. "I think it will be really exciting for the sport and with more races [held] the more seriously it will be taken. You can get out on the trails on rest days and pedal with full assist, making it a really easy day, but still being able to enjoy the trail networks. Or, if you want to get some proper training in, all you do is drop the assistance or find some steep climbs and you'll have a proper session. It's really an all-rounder bike in my eyes and an essential training tool at today's international level." (inthebunch.co.za, 17 Oct 2019)
