Her older sister Laura Smulders has competed internationally in BMX racing, and won the Netherlands' first Olympic medal in the sport [bronze] at the 2012 Games in London. She also won the world title in 2018. Her father Frank Smulders has been manager of the Oegema TVE BMX team in the Netherlands.
