His brother Petr Jr. has represented the Czech Republic in canoe sprint. He and Martin competed in the same boat together at the 2018 World Championships in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, and the 2019 European Games in Minsk, Belarus. His father Petr Sr. competed in canoe sprint at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, while his grandfather Josef won a gold medal [as a helmsman] in dragon boat racing at the 2005 World Games in Duisburg, Germany. He played ice hockey when he was younger. However, both his grandfather and his father had competed in paddling sports at international level and he eventually took up canoe sprint. "I played [ice hockey] until I was nine and loved it. I didn't enjoy canoeing. My grandfather would always ask me to train and I'd say, 'No, I don't enjoy it, I want to play ice hockey!'
