She trained in gymnastics but because of constant jumping and landing she felt pain in her joints. Her aunt recommended that she take up paddling and she decided to give it a try. She had juvenile idiopathic arthritis as a child and was forced to give up gymnastics because of the condition. She said that canoeing helped her to overcome the condition and that the experience made her more resilient.
