His father Steve won bronze for Australia in the K4 1000m at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona. His mother Anna won bronze for the Netherlands in the K2 500m at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, and claimed another bronze for Australia in the same event at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. She has also served as a national coach for the Australian women's canoe sprint team. His wife Alyce Wood [nee Burnett] has competed for Australia in canoe sprint and raced in the K2 500m at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. His mother encouraged him to become involved in the sport. "When I was young, I jumped in a boat but I actually wanted to be a mountain biker.
