She took up the sport in 2004 in a kayak, and switched to canoe events in 2016. (ardmediathek.de, 03 Dec 2019; German Canoe Federation Media Guide, 19 Aug 2019; morgenpost.de, 11 Mar 2018)
:
She began paddling at school. In 2016 she switched from kayak to canoe because she felt that she was not getting enough opportunities to compete in kayak at the highest level. "I thought a canoe would be easier than it was. The first day I trained, I was told to just paddle for an hour and try to get as far as I could. I managed about 10 minutes before I fell into the water. I think I must have fallen into the water another 20 times. But I kept getting back into the boat and persevered. I could only manage to paddle in a circle as I could not steer. Going straight should be the most banal thing, yet it was incredibly difficult. But I kept on improving as time went on."
