POLICING CAREER
At age 13 he left the family home to move to a sports boarding school in Essen, Germany. In high school he found it difficult to balance his studies and sport, and left before finishing his final exams. He enrolled in the police force as part of a special programme for elite athletes. "I wanted to do my final exams, but the schedule could not be juggled so well with my training. So I looked around for alternatives and got the tip to apply to the federal police, as they offer a training programme for top athletes. It was ideal for me. I was able to concentrate on paddling and still prepare for a future after my sports career. I am now a trained law enforcement officer, but I am free from police work to focus on sport."
