She learnt to swim at an early age and also spent time with her father on canoe trips on the Maschsee lake near Hanover, Germany. She eventually chose to pursue canoeing over swimming. "I was already swimming for my club at the age of four because my babysitter was an instructor there, in the Arnum district of Hemmingen, near Hanover. That's where I grew up.
