Her husband Mike Dawson has represented New Zealand in canoe slalom, including in the men's K1 event at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. (canoeslalom.net, 01 Jan 2019; nowtolove.co.nz, 16 Mar 2019; SportsDeskOnline, 24 Feb 2021)

She has competed whitewater canoeing and won four consecutive titles at the Sickline Extreme Kayak World Championships between 2008 and 2011. She has also competed in canoe freestyle and has been a European champion in the sport. (palmequipmenteurope.com, 06 Jul 2016; volkskrant.nl, 18 May 2020)

Her father was a canoe instructor and introduced her to the sport when she was age 11, paddling on rivers and at sea in the Netherlands. She first tried paddling on a whitewater course in Sault Brenaz, France, and she entered her first canoe freestyle event at age 14 in Plattling, Germany. She took up canoe slalom in 2014. "My father taught it. It was a lifestyle. We went on holiday to places where there was wild water. That's how I got involved. It was exciting, challenging." (nhnieuws.nl, 09 Jun 2020; thepaddlermag.com, 18 Apr 2015; palmequipmenteurope.com, 06 Jul 2016; volkskrant.nl, 18 May 2020)

She made the switch to canoe slalom in order to travel and compete with her husband, New Zealand slalom paddler Mike Dawson. She had previously competed in canoe freestyle and whitewater canoeing. "My husband, Mike Dawson, competed for New Zealand at two Olympics. He retired two years ago [in 2018], but I really liked his sport and it was easier to travel together. The other reason is that I found it challenging, without the risk of extreme whitewater kayaking. I felt confident on those waterfalls. I chose the line that reduced the risk. But of course the risk is still there. In canoe slalom the risk is much smaller than on a wild river, which I did before. If you make a mistake in whitewater kayaking, it could be life or death. But canoe slalom, on a fixed course, that is like getting on a bicycle to me." (volkskrant.nl, 18 May 2020)

General Interest

General
WHITEWATER CANOEING
Prior to taking up canoe slalom, when she was involved in whitewater canoeing she completed courses that included 15-metre waterfall drops, and in 2013 she kayaked the Murchiston Falls in Uganda, which includes a section of water with a high concentration of hippos and crocodiles. "You see videos of waterfalls, of people who go down there by kayak and you think they are really crazy. But then you are there yourself. At more than 10 metres, the psychological limit, you have to fall with the nose of the kayak into the water, so that you don't get hit hard. Water at the bottom of the waterfall contains a lot of air. If you land well in that, it is quite soft. But if you hit the water flat with your kayak, you have a lot of impact. There are people who have broken their backs like that. At the start it was like, 'No way, I would never run a 70-foot waterfall', but once you're at the top of it you're like, 'Okay, let's go!' When I started kayaking harder whitewater and waterfalls my dad once 'joked' he regrets getting me into the sport. I have no regrets at all." SWITCH TO CANOE SLALOM
She says making the switch to canoe slalom from whitewater canoeing was a challenge that she enjoyed. "I competed for many years in freestyle and extreme racing, but I never used to train for it, until I picked up the slalom discipline. My goal is to get as good as I can. A lot of slalom paddlers started when they were seven or eight years old, and there are not many people who cross over from whitewater to slalom at my age, or even cross over from whitewater to slalom in a lifetime. A lot of the people who do extreme kayaking think when they cross over to slalom that it is easy to get on the top. Which is totally not true." (volkskrant.nl, 18 May 2020; theflowcentre.com, 01 Jan 2018; palmequipmenteurope.com, 06 Jul 2016)

PREVIOUS OCCUPATION
She worked as an editor at Kayak Session Publishing in Lyon, France, between 2010 and 2014. (LinkedIn profile, 01 Nov 2020)
