He discovered the sport through a social project called 'Navega Sao Paulo'. He was inspired to become a canoeist after watching the Brazilian canoe sprint national team training in his hometown Piraju, Brazil. However he was sent to sailing for one year after a sports coach considered him too short for canoeing.
