"I started combat sports when I was young because my parents wanted me to defend myself, and my dad wouldn't let me walk to school by myself until I got a black belt in taekwondo. I tried boxing out at a local gym and really took to it. It was also a way to get fit because I was playing rugby at the time. I liked to be able to prove myself in male-dominated sports, especially sparring against the boys." (commonwealthgames.com.au, 01 Mar 2018; stingsports.com.au, 30 Mar 2018)

BREAKING STEREOTYPES
She says she enjoys subverting expectations around gender in boxing and that she is pleased to see more women take up the sport. "As soon as I say I am a female boxer, people go, 'What? Surely not. You are too pretty for that'. But there is something about it. It gives you so much confidence. When I was younger I was pretty quiet [and] I would kind of stand in the corner. What is a boxer supposed to look like? People expect me to be big. But we have five women on the Australian team and they are all beautiful girls. None of them fit the criteria of what a boxer is supposed to look like. And we are all really proud to be involved in the sport and to be breaking down stereotypes. When I first started boxing, there were hardly any girls in the sport. There are lots more women coming through now. The shift has been incredible. Even women doing it for fitness is important. I love to see it and I'm seeing a lot more of it." (abc.net.au, 22 Jun 2017; theroar.com.au, 01 Apr 2020)

She has coached children in sport, has performed relief work at a special needs school, and has led talks for schools and groups. (opensponsorship.com, 01 Sep 2018)
