In January 2014 he was shot in his left hip after he was held up by robbers. De la Cruz had been leaving a sports centre in Camaguey, Cuba, with fellow national team boxer Leinier Pero when the attack happened. MOVE TO HEAVYWEIGHT
He won a gold medal in the light heavyweight category at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, but he is competing in the heavyweight division at Tokyo 2020. "It suits me better. I have developed in other areas that I could not before because I had to lose 12 or 13kg to get down to 81kg. He was shot in his left hip in January 2014 during an attempted robbery. His attackers said they did not know who they were stealing from when they were later captured.
