Agatha Bednarczuk teamed up with Eduarda 'Duda' Santos Lisboa nearly six months after winning silver at the 2016 Olympic Games, where she and former partner Barbara Seixas lost the gold medal match to German duo Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst. Santos Lisboa, who won gold at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games, is making her Olympic debut in Tokyo while Bednarczuk is competing at her second Games.

Bednarczuk and Santos Lisboa tasted immediate success at world level after teaming up in January 2017, claiming four medals in their first four World Tour events, including gold on home sand in Rio. They went on to make the final at three consecutive editions of the World Tour Finals from 2017 to 2019, losing the first to Germans Laura Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst before defeating Czech pair Barbora Hermannova and Marketa Slukova in the 2018 edition. In 2019 they lost the final to Ludwig again alongside her new partner, Margareta Kozuch.

Santos Lisboa, who won three U19 and two U21 world titles, is 15 years younger than Bednarczuk.
