He said that teaming up with Martins Plavins in late 2017 provided him with his final chance of competing at the highest level in the sport. "I knew I could play at the highest level, but I was a bit lacking all the time. I began playing volleyball only at university, before that I thought I would be a basketball player. I struggled for a long time, looking for the right partner. [In 2017], it seemed like time was running out. The sport does not provide income, I was training alone and then working until midnight. I started to look like a zombie. Then Martins called and I realised it was my last chance. I left all my jobs, my account balance went to zero. But we won the first tournament in The Hague [in January 2018], and then things started to look up, and we won medals in the next two tournaments as well." (la.lv, 01 Nov 2018)
