FAMILY SUPPORT
Since the beginning of his volleyball career his parents supported him by travelling to his matches. Even his father, who was never interested in volleyball, got involved. "My father only started to enjoy volleyball later, when he also followed me everywhere. The whole family went on the road to competitions. I thought that was normal at the time, but now I see that it is special. I am also grateful to them. Nowadays my parents also go to tournaments abroad, which is very cool." He and teammate Alexander Brouwer won the Netherlands' first beach volleyball medal at the Olympic Games when they claimed bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2013 they also claimed the Netherlands' first world championship title in the sport. (SportsDeskOnline, 01 May 2020)
