He teamed up with Robert Meeuwsen in 2011. "We had tough moments, especially 2014 was a difficult year for us. But we made a decision to stick together, to work and improve things and get better as a team, instead of choosing the easy way and switching partners. I think this is paying off." FATHER'S SUPPORT
When he started in the national volleyball team, he had to travel every week to other cities and his father, who was a volleyball player, would always drive him. "When I was about 16, I trained every Sunday with the national selection in Zeist. At nine in the morning I had to be there, and we lived in Groningen. My father and I got into the car early in the morning, when it was still dark outside and nobody else was driving on the road. I have fond memories of those two hours together in the car. I was certainly aware that it was special that my father did all that for me. On the other hand, I also saw that dad loved doing it. He really is a sports and volleyball fanatic. He and teammate Robert Meeuwsen won the Netherlands' first beach volleyball medal at the Olympic Games when they claimed bronze at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. In 2013 they also claimed the Netherlands' first world championship title in the sport. (SportsDeskOnline, 01 May 2020)
