He initially wanted to play football, but when his mother signed him up to a club there were only places available in volleyball. He was later inspired to take up beach volleyball after watching Brazilian pair Emanuel and Ricardo win gold at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. "It [volleyball] wasn't my choice. Back then I saw the sport as something feminine, but I got to the point where my thinking matured. I went there and I loved it. The sport embraced me in such a way that I never left." General
HARD TIMES AND MATURITY
In 2018 he said the death of his father and disappointing results with Bruno Schmidt, which contributed to them parting ways, affected his sporting performances. "I lost my father and it was very difficult to heal. I'm playing this sport because of him. He introduced me to it. When he died I lost my self confidence. I lost a loved one, and at the same time lost a successful partnership [with Bruno]." In early 2019 he teamed up with Alvaro Filho, and the pair went on to claim an Olympic berth. "When people see the performances of an athlete, they don't always know what is going on behind closed doors. People make a judgement but there are other things behind the scenes going on. 2018 was a difficult year for me. If I hadn't qualified for Tokyo I maybe wouldn't have continued with my career. When Alvaro and I joined forces, in March [2019], there were some fears that maybe we wouldn't qualify [for Tokyo], but once we started to know each other better and to progress as a team, this fear started to dissipate. It was hard, but it was easily the Olympic quad in which I matured the most." (volleyball.world, 21 Oct 2019; sportv.globo.com, 14 May 2019; folhape.com.br, 28 Nov 2019)

TATTOOS
He has a tattoo of a mammoth on his torso in reference to his nickname 'Mammoth'. He also has tattoos that reference his family and his Olympic medals, as well as the Portuguese lyrics 'Dias de luta, dias de gloria' [Fighting days, glory days] from Brazilian rock band 'Charlie Brown Jr.' (webvolei.com.br, 25 May 2020)

OTHER ACTIVITIES
In 2016 he established a series of volleyball clinics for young children in Vitoria, Brazil. "I'm not even thinking about building up athletes, but human beings. To show them that anything is possible. I come from the interior of the Espirito Santo state [in Brazil] and won two Olympic medals. Being Olympic champion is a dream come true but it also allows me to show that you can achieve your dreams even if you're not an athlete. That is very gratifying. I think I have so much to give back to volleyball." (webvolei.com.br, 25 May 2020)
