General
SWITCH TO BEACH
In 2017 she switched from volleyball to beach volleyball, having played the indoor version of the sport at high school, university and in club leagues in Italy and Brazil. She says she made the decision in response to the disappointment of not being selected for the US volleyball team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. "It feels like such a distant memory. That was my life from age eight to 26. That was all I lived and breathed. And now, I almost can't remember it. In the beginning, I was like, 'I'm an indoor player who switched to the beach'. I feel like I've shed that other part of my identity. [Missing out on selection for Rio] made me evaluate everything. Yeah, I love volleyball, but I love it because I'm chasing the biggest goal. Once that was taken away, it took away a little bit of my purpose. It really appealed to me on the beach that, if you get the results, nobody gets to say no to you." (olympics.nbcsports.com, 19 May 2019; latimes.com, 15 Aug 2019, 10 Mar 2020)

PARTNERSHIP
She partnered with her teammate April Ross in 2017, after her first season playing on the Association of Volleyball Professionals [AVP] tour. Ross approached her after splitting with her partner Kerri Walsh. "I knew as soon as I partnered with April that I was giving myself the best chance to succeed. I knew she would make me look better because of how good she is, but I don't think I anticipated how much she would teach me as well." (olympics.nbcsports.com, 14 Jul 2019; p1440.com, 06 Aug 2019)

SANCTION
In 2013 she was suspended for 13 months by the United States Anti-Doping Agency [USADA] after testing positive for an androgenic anabolic steroid or its precursors. A panel from the American Arbitration Association [AAA] of the North American Court of Arbitration for Sport, who confirmed the suspension, accepted her explanation that she had inadvertently ingested the prohibited substance from her mother's DHEA supplements that had been mixed with her own vitamins. Her contract with Imoco Volley in Italy was terminated due to her suspension. She was free to return to volleyball in June 2014. (usada.org, 12 Dec 2013)
