General Interest

General
The 2020 Olympic Games will be the Republic of Korea's first Olympic appearance since 2008, and comes courtesy of a third-place finish in Group B at the 2020 Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Belgrade, Serbia. They finished ranked eighth in their last appearance at the Games in Beijing, which was an improvement from their last-place finish at the 2004 Games. A silver medal at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, where they lost the final to the host nation, remains their only Olympic medal to date. The closest they have come since then is a fourth-place finish in 2000, when they lost the bronze medal match to Brazil.

The Republic of Korea have taken part in every World Cup [formerly known as the world championship] since 1964, and have finished runners-up twice in that time. They won silver behind the Soviet Union in 1967, and behind the United States of America on home soil in 1979.

At continental level, the 2018 Asian Games saw the Republic of Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea merge to compete as a unified Korean women's basketball team. After winning three matches and losing one to Chinese Taipei in the group stage, they managed to defeat Chinese Taipei in the semifinal to set up a gold medal match against the People's Republic of China. However, the unified Korean team lost the final 71-65. At the 2014 edition the Republic of Korea defeated the People's Republic of China in the final 70-64 to claim their fourth Asian Games title.

The Republic of Korea finished in fourth place at both the 2017 and 2019 Asia Cup, which marks a low point in the tournament for the team. At every other edition of the competition between 1965 and 2015 they finished on the podium, and have won a record 12 gold medals at the tournament as of 2019.
