General Interest

General
France are making their 10th Olympic appearance in Tokyo since first appearing at the 1936 Games, and have claimed two medals in that time. They finished runners-up twice, in 1948 and 2000, losing the final to the United States of America on both occasions. Five years ago in Rio de Janeiro, the French were knocked out at the quarterfinal stage by Spain, who also beat them in the last eight at London 2012.

The French team arrive in Tokyo having placed third at the 2019 World Cup in the People's Republic of China, a result that secured their qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games. France knocked out the US team that were reigning world champions in the quarterfinals, before losing to Argentina at the semifinal stage. They beat Australia to finish third, which was also their ranking at the 2014 World Cup.

France won their first European championship title in 2013, with an 80-66 win over Lithuania. They also finished runners-up in 2011 and third in 2015, but dipped to a disappointing 12th in their most recent appearance at the tournament in 2017.
