CLUB JOURNEY
He was selected by the Cleveland Indians in the 2014 MLB Draft, but chose to uphold his commitment to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he had been offered a scholarship. During his two years at university he played mainly at first and third base, and only pitched in one appearance. He was selected again by the Indians in the 30th round, 902nd overall pick, of the 2016 MLB Draft. He played at Rookie league level in 2016 before stepping up to the minors in 2017, and was traded to the New York Mets the same year. In 2018 he was promoted to the Double-A level Binghamton Rumble Ponies. In late 2020 he was traded to the Texas Rangers and in 2021 he was playing at Rangers' Triple-A affiliate Round Rock Express. CHANCE SCOUT ENCOUNTER
During the one game he played as a pitcher during his two-year college baseball career, a scout from the Cleveland Indians was watching from the stands. This encounter eventually led to the Indians' second successful attempt to sign him as a pitcher. "I had no idea I was going to pitch that game. I was in the dugout, and the coach said, 'Go down to the bullpen'. We were up, 15-3, or something like that. They gave me a shot out there. I did okay. I was ready. I got the opportunity, and I guess [Indians scout] Bob Mayer saw that - he was there for that game. I'm just glad I got the opportunity to show what I had. That one inning? Yeah, it got me to this point, and I've just got to keep working hard." (news-herald.com, 11 Jun 2017)
