While playing for University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as a freshman in 2006, he earned All-American honours from Baseball America, was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball, and earned a spot on the All-Tournament Team at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional and the All-College World Series team. He was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the seventh round, 232nd overall pick, of the 2008 MLB Draft. After spending three seasons in the minor leagues, he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2011 and made his MLB debut that season. He played four seasons with the Dodgers, appearing in 89 MLB games, before he was traded to the San Diego Padres in late 2014 but did not appear in the MLB for the Padres. He was picked up as a free agent by the Chicago Cubs in 2016 and played in 17 MLB games that season before moving to the San Francisco Giants in 2017 where he featured in 13 MLB games. In 2018 he made MLB appearances for both the Cincinnati Reds and the Houston Astros, and in 2019 for the Texas Rangers. In 2020 he was signed by the Dodgers once again and played for the team's Triple-A minor league affiliate team the Oklahoma City Dodgers in 2021.
