His professional career began in 2006 in the Rookie-level Appalachian league, and he spent the next three years working his way up the minor leagues until 2010 when he was assigned to the Triple-A team Memphis Redbirds, an affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. He made his MLB debut for the Cardinals in 2011, featuring in four games that season and another four MLB games in 2012 before being released by the Cardinals. From 2013 to 2020 he moved to Osaka, Japan, where he played in 215 games for Nippon Professional Baseball team the Orix Buffaloes. He was unable to return to Japan in 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions and was released by the team. In June 2021 he was signed as a free agent to the St. Louis Cardinals, and was assigned to the Memphis Redbirds again.
