His father Won Min-Gu was a baseball player. Despite being drafted by Korea Baseball Organisation [KBO] Samsung Lions in 1984 and 1985, he decided to play for Cheil Bank, which was an amateur business team. He later served as the head coach at Kyungbok Middle School from 1997 to 2019. His older brother Won Tae-Jin joined KBO club SK Wyverns in 2005, but the following year retired from competitive baseball due to injuries. He became an assistant coach at Kyungbok Middle School. When he was age five, he threw the ceremonial first pitch for Samsung Lions at a match at Daegu Civic Stadium Baseball Field in Republic of Korea. In 2019 he joined Samsung Lions, his favourite club since childhood. "Playing for the Lions has been a dream of mine since I was little. I did get offers from high school scouts of other regions. But if I joined, that meant I couldn't get drafted by the Lions in the first round so I declined. I'm very happy to have achieved my dream and goal of becoming Samsung's starting pitcher."
