He began coaching at club level in Italy, including at Ronchi dei Legionari, Porpetto, Castionese and San Marino, before joining the Italian national team setup. He was part of the coaching staff on numerous youth national teams and the men's senior national team, before becoming an assistant coach to Enrico Obletter on the Italian women's senior team.

He was named head coach of the Italian women's national team in March 2021 after former coach, Enrico Obletter, passed away due to complications related to COVID-19. Obletter's wife Giovanna Palermi was an assistant coach with the team, and said she would remain in her role under Pizzolini, as did longtime fellow assistant coach Julio La Rosa. Pizzolini said he hoped to continue Obletto's legacy. "He [Obletto] was like a brother to me, on the softball field and in life. Our relationship began 35 years ago. He has left a hole in our hearts, and in that of softball. His experience cannot be matched, by me or any other Italian coach. He was the one who created and developed the Italian women's team, and brought us the results. We must be grateful for that. I will always be proud to have worked with him on this national team, which is his creation. I will just try to continue his work.
