She began playing softball at age five. "I actually played in first grade, but quit after one season. I played almost every sport growing up. When I was 10 I attempted softball again, and started pitching when I was 11." (usafastpitch.com, 10 Jul 2015)
:
As a child she played football and basketball, until one day her Little League coach needed another pitcher. She volunteered, and fell in love with the role. She credits her family with instilling her competitive drive. "I think being competitive is just something that's in my family. [My parents] made it clear if I was going to be doing something I better be doing it 100%. If I wasn't going to give 100%, than they weren't going to pay for stuff like pitching lessons. So I did. And when you love what you're doing, it's easy to give 100%." (nfca.org, 03 Aug 2016; active.com, 2015)

University of Texas softball coach Connie Clark. "She gave me an opportunity that as I get older, I've always reflected back on the fact that if I had gone to school anywhere else, I'm not thrown into the fire as a freshman like I was. I think any other place I decided to go, I would have been a No. 2 or a No. 3 and not the pitcher. She prepared me for later on. She trusted in me as a young freshman." (hookem.com, 23 May 2018)
:
"I think most of what I do is habit more than superstition. I put my uniform on the same way, socks always last. I warm up my pitches in the same order, but not because if I don't I won't throw well. It's just routine by now. Only real superstition is that I don't step on the chalk lines." (usafastpitch.com, 10 Jul 2015)
:
"I know perfection is unattainable, but the chase to be as close to it as I can is an enjoyable challenge for me." (wilson.com, 01 Jan 2020)
