His father introduced him to the sport. "When I started playing badminton it was like a sport from another planet. Nobody knew anything about it, none of my schoolmates or friends had heard about it. However, it made a huge difference to my life. In 2007 I started to travel around the world. There were so many things to see and experience. I made new friends, learnt new languages and different cultures. Travelling helped me improve my English. Badminton has also helped me financially. The sport has definitely changed my life." MOVE TO EUROPE
Following the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, he relocated to Europe with a view to improving his game. He first lived in France before moving to Denmark in February 2018 to begin working with Danish coach Nadia Lyduch and to play in the Danish Badminton League. In 2020 he began working with Danish coach Michael Kjeldsen. "I was right that I had a certain link with her [Lyduch]. I play in the Danish league in which there are players among the top 30 in the world, and I have beaten some of them." (gauchazh.clicrbs.com.br, 02 Aug 2019; olimpiadatododia.com.br, 12 Feb 2020)

SAMBA MOVEMENTS
He credits the Brazilian dance style, samba, with helping him to meet the physical demands of badminton. "Incorporating samba into my movements helps me with my on-court manoeuvres. It's a very Brazilian and interesting way to train." The 'samba way' of training was developed by his father Sebastiao at his Miratus Project in the Chacrinha community of Rio de Janeiro, which introduces badminton to underprivileged children. They would train to samba music, and try to develop a feel for badminton foot movements in time with the musical rhythm. (bwfbadminton.com, 07 Apr 2016)
