Italy's mixed 4x400m relay team just missed out on qualifying for Tokyo at the world championships in 2019 in Doha. The eight teams that qualified for the final in Doha earned a ticket to Tokyo, and Italy missed out by a single place after setting the ninth-fastest time. Earlier that year they had finished fourth at the World Relays.

In 2021, however, Italy made no mistake as they set the fastest qualifying time in the heats at the 2021 World Relays to earn their Olympic berth. They went on to repeat the feat in the final, winning gold in Poland nearly a full second ahead of runners-up Brazil.
