General
Prior to reunification, both the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic won Olympic medals in the 4x400m relay. Competing as a reunified Germany for the first time in 1992, the team finished sixth in Barcelona. Four years later Germany claimed their first and only Olympic medal to date in the event, finishing third at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.
In five Olympic appearances since then, the German team have only made the final at the 2008 Games. They originally finished last out of eight teams in Beijing but were later promoted to sixth following the disqualification of the Russian and Belarusian teams. At the 2016 Games they missed out on a place in the final after setting the ninth-fastest time in the heats.
Germany have had more success at the world championships, claiming four medals [one gold, one silver, two bronze] since first competing in 1991. However, their last medal came in 2001 and they did not take part at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2019. They secured their ticket to Tokyo by making the final of the 2021 World Relays in Chorzow, where they finished sixth in the final.
