General Interest

General
The Netherlands took part in the first Olympic Games to feature a women's 4x100m event, on home soil at the 1928 Games in Amsterdam. 20 years later they claimed their first medal in the event, a gold at the 1948 Games in London ahead of Australia. They have made 11 Olympic appearances in the event in total, but have not returned to the podium since 1948. The closest they have come was a fourth-place finish in Mexico in 1968. At the 2016 Games they failed to progress beyond the heats.

The Dutch team have never won a medal at the world championships. Like their most recent Olympic appearance, they failed to qualify for the final at the most recent edition of the world championships in 2019, missing out by a single place behind Italy. They secured their ticket to Tokyo by setting the fastest qualifying time in the heats at the 2021 World Relays, and went on to claim bronze in the final.

At continental level, they won a European championship gold medal in 2016 ahead of Great Britain, but finished second behind the British team at the 2018 edition.
