In eight Olympic appearances Italy have won one medal, a bronze at Moscow 1980. The Italians first competed at the Olympic Games in 1924, and Tokyo is the first edition of the Games the team have qualified for since Atlanta in 1996.

Italy placed sixth at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, which was the team's best result at the tournament since finishing fifth on their debut at the 1983 edition. They competed at the World Relays for the first time in 2019 in Yokohama, finishing ninth, which was followed by a fourth-place finish at the 2021 edition.
