France finished on the podium when the men's 4x400m relay first appeared at the Olympic Games in 1912, claiming silver behind the United States of America. Since then they have won one more silver [1948], and bronze twice [1920 and 1972]. They have competed in the event at 17 editions of the Games, a record bettered only by Great Britain [23] and the United States of America [22]. At the 2016 Games in Rio, the French team were ranked ninth after the heats and did not qualify for the final.

France qualified for Tokyo by making the final at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where they finished last out of the seven teams that posted a result. Their gold medal at the 2003 World Championships in Paris remains their only podium finish at the tournament.
