Botswana are making their sixth Olympic appearance at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, having first competed in 1988 in Seoul. They have qualified for the final twice at the Games, first in 2004 in Athens where they were ranked eighth and again at the 2016 Games where they finished fifth in a national record time.

They have not fared as well at the world championships and are yet to qualify for the final in 10 attempts since 1997.

Botswana qualified for Tokyo by making the final at the 2021 World Relays in Chorzow, Poland, where they finished with the bronze medal. In recent years they also won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2018 and the African Games in 2019.
