COMPETING FOR TURKEY
She was born in Ethiopia, but at age 16 left the country without identification documents and went to Lebanon. While there a fellow Ethiopian advised her to try and get to Turkey and find Ertan Hatipoglu, who coached Ethiopian-born distance runner Elvan Abeylegesse. She entered Turkey, and spent time in a refugee camp until she received her Ethiopian passport. She met with Hatipoglu who acknowledged her as an athlete with potential. She represented Ethiopia under the name Mariam Tanga until 2010 when she received Turkish citizenship and took the name Meryem Erdogan, after Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan. (haberturk.com, 17 Nov 2015; hurriyet.com.tr, 07 Jun 2010; IAAF, 22 Feb 2009)

SANCTION
In 2012 she received a two-year suspension from the International Association of Athletics Federations [IAAF] for an anti-doping rule violation based on an abnormal athlete biological passport profile. (IAAF, 25 Jul 2012)
