She would run around with her older sister as a toddler, and first ran on a track at age four. She also took part in gymnastics and ballet as a child. "I was about two years old when my sister was doing hill exercises and I would run with her, holding hands up the hill. In addition, from a young age, I also went to her ski club. I think my first 400m track running result was when I was around four years old." (viivilehikoinen.fi, 31 Jul 2019)

She joined a ballet group at age six where her athletics potential was spotted during a routine. She began organised athletics at Nurmijarven Yleisurheilun and tried a range of disciplines. "The ballet was too slow for me. My final choice of athletics seemed to have come at our group's festive performance. The performance included a light jump from one carpet to another and my movements were more reminiscent of a long jump, so my ballet buddy's mother recommended that I should try athletics instead." In 2017 she was named Most Promising Athlete of the Year by Finnish newspaper Helsingen Sanomat. (hs.fi, 31 Dec 2017)

NEW COACH AND FOCUS
She began working with Swiss coach Laurent Meuwly in December 2020 after breaking from previous coach Jussi Ihamaki. She also works with Finnish-based coach Mikael Ylostalo. "I suggested it myself [working under Meuwly], and Jussi agreed. Developments have not gone in the desired direction in recent years, although we have changed a wide range of things. I had been training alone a lot in recent years, whereas now I'm working with a coach almost every day. The situation is much better than it has been for many years. I didn't want to continue the situation of training alone." She said Meuwly has shifted her focus in training towards speed over endurance. "In the coming season [2021] we will definitely focus on speed and power generation. We're trying to get back to speed, it's an important part of the 400m. In recent years, we have focused too much on developing endurance, which took the speed away." (yle.fi, 06 Dec 2020)
