She began her studies at Auburn University in Alabama, but after her mother passed away from breast cancer she transferred to the University of Miami in 2014/15 to be closer to her grandmother in Florida. She said she was about to give up on athletics at the time, because she thought she had reached her peak in the sport. But she improved, and continued. "I'm an only child and the Olympics were never in my mind because I've struggled so much. Now, whatever God puts on my plate, I'm taking."
