"My family has always been involved in sports, so I grew up playing basketball, volleyball and gymnastics, and usually showed up to my eye doctor with broken glasses after playing football with my brother. I got into running in middle school after copying my older sister, and I continued with cross-country and track during high school. OLYMPIC TRIALS EXHAUSTION
After finishing third in the US trials for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, she was taken to hospital after suffering from hyperthermia due to the heat during the race. "The last couple of laps, I don't really remember. Even at five kilometres, I thought, 'Man, it's getting kind of hot'. [Officials] helped me to the tunnel to get cold towels and water. Then I came back out for an interview and the podium, but I don't remember that much either. During the victory lap, I kept getting more and more tired. About three-quarters of the way through, I stopped to hug my boyfriend and my family and started to black out. I got into a cold tank for three or four minutes. I was feeling better at first, but then I started shutting down more. They realised I was hyperthermic at that point. I was 94 degrees [fahrenheit] when they took my temperature. That was scary, my body was totally in shock. By the next day, the cardiologist said, 'All that really happened was you had heat exhaustion and you really needed fluids'. It was definitely not your traditional making-an-Olympic-team experience." (runnersworld.com, 15 Jul 2021)
